Photo Rescue #1: Lightroom & Photoshop Edit with PS Actions

Taking photographs under the mid day sun is not always fun :( Blown out highlights, dark shadows, squinty eyes, and white skies are just some of the things that are difficult to work with when shooting.

Below is the SOOC (Straight out of camera) image. In this photo, the skies are not blown out, but I have to improve the shadows.

I love how my daughter smiled here :)

For this tutorial, we need the following:
1.       Lightroom 4 or 5
2.       Photoshop CS5, CS6 or CC
3.       Photoshop Actions sets: Joyful Spring +Essentials Bundle and Soft Hazes

Step 1: I want a brighter photo, so I go to the Tone Curve and adjust the Darks and Shadows in Lightroom 5.

Step 2: I go to the Basic adjustment panel and make the following adjustments:

Step 3: I use the Radial Filter with the settings shown below.

Step 4: I bring the photo to Photoshop CC.

Step 5: I remove the building on the background with Content-Aware Move Tool.

Step 6: I flatten the image.

Step 7: Play “CLEAN BASE JS [ColourThemPretty]” from the PS Actions Set: CTP Joyful Spring. I open the group and change the opacity of the following layers: Clarity – 18% and Reduce Highlights – 27%.

Step 8 : Play “Brighten/Darken (Paint on)” from the PS Actions Set: CTP Essentials. I paint on the subject using a soft white brush with 40% opacity and 50% flow. I change the opacity of the “Brighten_po” layer to 32%.

Step 9 : Play “Clarity (Paint-on) [ColourThemPretty]” from the PS Actions Set: CTP Essentials and paint on the eyes, nose, mouth and a little on the hair.

Step 10: Play the following actions from the PS Actions Set: CTP Joyful Spring and change the opacity of each layer.

Step 11: Lastly, play the following actions from the PS Actions Set: CTP Soft Hazes.
